Destination Guide
Historic Fort Reno near El Reno has one of Oklahoma's strongest combinations of documented military history and organized paranormal tourism. The post began in the 1870s during the federal government's campaigns and reservation period involving the Southern Plains tribes. It later served as a remount station and, during World War II, as a prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers. The surviving buildings, cemetery and open grounds give the fort a substantial historical presence even before the ghost stories are considered.
Fort Reno's spirit tours build on reports of footsteps, cold spots, doors opening or closing, faces in windows and other unexplained experiences. Lantern-lit tours typically include historic buildings and may also incorporate the post cemetery, with guides mixing documented history with accounts collected from staff, visitors and paranormal investigators.
The fort is more compelling than a conventional ghost attraction because the setting is authentic. Officer quarters, military structures and the cemetery create a direct link to more than a century of use. Visitors who come for the supernatural stories often leave with a deeper understanding of Fort Reno's roles in western expansion, military logistics, the Land Run era and World War II.
