Destination Guide
Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton protects one of Oklahoma's most dramatic combinations of granite mountains, mixed-grass prairie and free-ranging wildlife. Established in the early twentieth century, the refuge became an important site for the conservation of American bison and later elk, longhorn cattle and other species.
The landscape is unusually rugged for Oklahoma. Granite domes and rocky ridges rise sharply above open prairie, creating habitats that support bison, deer, prairie dogs, birds and a wide variety of plants. Scenic roads, hiking routes and overlooks make it possible to experience the area at several levels, from easy wildlife viewing to strenuous backcountry travel.
The refuge is also culturally and historically complex. Native nations have long-standing connections to the region, and nearby Fort Sill, the Holy City and Medicine Park add additional layers to a visit. Wildlife should always be given substantial distance, especially bison, which can move quickly and unpredictably. For many visitors, the Wichitas are the clearest demonstration that Oklahoma contains true mountain scenery rather than only rolling plains.
