Destination Guide

Whizbang—later known as Denoya—was one of the most colorful boomtowns created by the Osage oil rush. The settlement sprang up near productive leases and quickly acquired the rough-and-ready reputation typical of temporary oil camps: crowded streets, hastily built businesses, entertainment and a large transient workforce. The town's unusual name reflected the explosive pace of development. As production patterns shifted and oil infrastructure became more permanent, the settlement declined and much of the original boomtown disappeared. Its history is especially important because the oil beneath Osage land was owned through the Osage mineral estate. The royalties generated extraordinary wealth for Osage headright holders, and that wealth later became entangled with exploitation, guardianship abuse and the murders known as the Osage Reign of Terror. Whizbang therefore belongs to a much larger story than a colorful oil-camp anecdote. Today the former townsite is largely a landscape destination, best understood with old photographs, maps and regional interpretation from Pawhuska or Fairfax.
