Destination Guide

Travertine Creek is one of the defining natural features of Chickasaw National Recreation Area at Sulphur. Fed by springs in the Platt District, the clear creek flows through a wooded landscape of pools, small cascades and mineral deposits before joining larger waterways. The creek's travertine forms as dissolved minerals precipitate from the water, building pale limestone-like surfaces around falls and stream edges. Little Niagara is its best-known cascade, but quieter stretches of the creek can be equally attractive, especially away from summer crowds. Historically, spring water was the reason Sulphur developed as a resort and health destination. The creek and nearby springs were eventually protected within the federal reservation that became Platt National Park and later part of Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Today swimming, picnicking and walking remain popular, but the historical landscape is also worth noticing: stone bridges, paths and CCC-era features show how recreation was designed around the natural water system. Travertine Creek is a place where geology, park history and everyday summer recreation overlap unusually well.
