Destination Guide

The Three Sands oil field near Tonkawa was one of northern Oklahoma's major petroleum discoveries and helped drive a dramatic boom in the early 1920s. The name referred to multiple productive oil-bearing sands, and drilling activity quickly transformed the surrounding countryside. The boom created temporary camps, new roads, pipelines and intense commercial activity. Tonkawa benefited from the influx of workers and money, while the surrounding field became crowded with derricks and equipment. Like many Oklahoma oil booms, the landscape changed again as production declined and technology evolved. Today the Three Sands story is best understood through historic markers, surviving oil infrastructure, local museum collections and the open countryside where the field once operated at full intensity. The lack of a single preserved boomtown complex can actually make the site more interesting for industrial-history travelers, because it requires comparing the quiet present-day landscape with photographs of the densely developed field. It is an excellent example of how quickly oil could create—and then erase—a temporary industrial city.
