Destination Guide

Tenkiller State Park overlooks one of Oklahoma's clearest and most scenic reservoirs. The lake is surrounded by wooded hills and rocky shoreline, giving it a landscape more typical of the Ozarks than the open plains. Boating, swimming, fishing and scuba diving are major attractions. Clearer water than many Oklahoma lakes makes Tenkiller especially popular with divers, while anglers pursue bass, crappie and other species. The park contains campsites, cabins, trails and lake access, making it suitable for both weekend stays and day trips. Steep terrain around parts of the shoreline creates excellent views but can also limit easy access in some areas. Tenkiller's location near Tahlequah and numerous Cherokee historical sites allows travelers to combine outdoor recreation with cultural history. The lake itself is the main draw, but the wooded surroundings and proximity to eastern Oklahoma attractions make the park one of the state's most versatile destinations.

Practical Tips

Lake Tenkiller is one of the clearest lakes in Oklahoma — popular for scuba diving. The bluff-top cabins have stunning views. Book well in advance for summer.
