Destination Guide

Salt Plains State Park sits beside Great Salt Plains Lake and the broad salt flats that make this part of northwestern Oklahoma unique. The white, mineral-encrusted landscape contrasts sharply with surrounding prairie and can look almost desert-like under bright sun. The park provides camping, lake access, fishing and birdwatching, while the nearby national wildlife refuge contains the designated crystal-digging area. Visitors should distinguish between the state park and refuge because rules and access differ. The lake is relatively shallow and can change appearance substantially with water level and weather. Shorebirds and migratory waterfowl are major attractions, especially during seasonal movements. The region's signature activity is digging for hourglass selenite crystals, but that takes place under refuge regulations rather than anywhere on the flats. Salt Plains State Park is therefore a good base for a broader visit combining camping, birding, unusual geology and one of Oklahoma's most hands-on natural-history experiences.

Practical Tips

Crystal digging is allowed April 1 through October 15. Bring a shovel and bucket — the crystals are literally in the ground. The salt flats look like snow and are dazzlingly bright.
