Destination Guide
The Round Barn of Arcadia is one of Route 66's most recognizable Oklahoma landmarks. Built in the late nineteenth century, the large wooden barn is circular rather than rectangular, with a soaring interior roof structure that made it both practical and visually unusual. It predates Route 66, but the highway later brought generations of motorists past its front door and turned it into a roadside icon.
The barn's survival is a major part of the story. By the late twentieth century it had deteriorated badly and was in danger of collapse before local volunteers organized a restoration. Their work preserved not only the exterior form but also the remarkable upper loft, whose curved wooden structure creates one of the most memorable interior spaces along Oklahoma's stretch of the Mother Road.
Today the barn functions as a museum, gathering place and photo stop. Exhibits explain local and Route 66 history, while the architecture remains the main attraction. Its location in Arcadia also makes it easy to combine with nearby POPS and other old-highway sites. Few places better demonstrate how an ordinary agricultural building can become a statewide symbol simply by surviving in the right place.
