Destination Guide

Rentiesville is one of Oklahoma's historically Black towns and one of the best places to explore the state's African American rural history. Founded in Indian Territory, the community developed during a period when Black settlers—many with ties to the Five Tribes through Freedmen communities—created towns where they could own land, operate businesses and exercise greater political and social independence. The town is closely associated with blues musician D.C. Minner, whose former club and the annual Dusk 'til Dawn Blues Festival helped give Rentiesville a second layer of cultural importance. That music history sits alongside older stories of farming, churches, schools and civic life. Rentiesville today is small, but its scale should not obscure its historical significance. Surviving buildings, local institutions and the town layout provide a direct link to the broader network of all-Black towns that once existed across Oklahoma. A visit is especially meaningful when paired with places such as Boley, Clearview, Langston or Tullahassee, allowing travelers to see how Black town-building took different forms in different parts of the state.
