Destination Guide
Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park near Hinton occupies a narrow canyon cut into the red sandstone of western Oklahoma. The steep walls, shaded floor and distinctive color make the landscape feel more enclosed and dramatic than the open plains surrounding it.
The canyon was historically important as a landmark and stopping place for travelers moving through the region. Wagon traffic and later roads took advantage of the sheltered route, and the combination of water, shade and natural passage through the terrain made the area useful long before it became a recreation destination.
Today the park offers hiking, camping, climbing and scenic exploration. Short trails lead beneath the canyon walls and through wooded areas that are especially attractive in spring and fall. The rock itself is relatively soft and can become slick or fragile after rain, so visitors should pay attention to trail conditions and posted climbing rules. Red Rock Canyon is a strong example of how erosion can create unexpectedly dramatic topography in a part of Oklahoma often assumed to be uniformly flat.
