Destination Guide
Quartz Mountain State Park sits beside Lake Altus-Lugert where rugged granite hills rise sharply from the plains of southwestern Oklahoma. The combination of rock, water and open sky creates one of the state's most dramatic state-park landscapes.
The area is popular for hiking, boating, fishing and climbing, with trails ranging from easy lakeside walks to steep, rocky routes. Exposed granite provides excellent viewpoints but can become extremely hot in summer and slick after rain.
Quartz Mountain has long been associated with arts education as well as recreation, giving the park an unusual cultural dimension. Lodging and meeting facilities make it suitable for both family trips and organized retreats.
Low lake levels during drought can substantially change the appearance of the shoreline and recreation opportunities, so current conditions are worth checking. Even when water is limited, the granite formations remain impressive. The park is one of the best places in Oklahoma to combine mountain scenery with a developed lake destination.
Practical Tips
The Arts Center hosts the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. Baldy Mountain hiking trail offers great views. The lake has a swimming beach.
