Destination Guide

The Peter Conser Historic Home near Heavener preserves the story of one of the Choctaw Nation's best-known nineteenth-century lawmen and political figures. Peter Conser served as a deputy sheriff and later as a member of the Choctaw National Council during the final decades of Indian Territory, when tribal governments maintained their own legal institutions while facing increasing pressure from the United States. The house gives visitors a rare chance to connect that political history with a domestic setting. Rather than interpreting Choctaw history only through treaties and government buildings, the site shows the home life, material culture and social standing of a prominent Choctaw family. Conser's law-enforcement career also provides context for the often complicated jurisdictional world of Indian Territory, where tribal, federal and local authority overlapped. The property is especially valuable because southeastern Oklahoma retains relatively few historic homes connected so directly to Choctaw governmental life before statehood. A visit can be paired with Fort Coffee, Skullyville, Tuskahoma or other Choctaw-related destinations for a broader understanding of how the Choctaw Nation governed, educated and organized its communities in the nineteenth century.
