Destination Guide

Parallel Forest in the Wichita Mountains is a grove of trees planted in remarkably straight rows as part of an early twentieth-century conservation experiment. The systematic spacing was intended to study whether tree cover could help control erosion and improve damaged land. The result is visually striking. Long lines of trunks create repeated geometric corridors that feel very different from a naturally regenerated forest. That unusual appearance has inspired a substantial body of modern folklore involving hauntings, rituals and a circular clearing said to have mysterious qualities. The supernatural stories are not supported by the practical history of the planting, but they have become part of the site's popular identity. Visitors can appreciate both layers: the real conservation experiment and the eerie atmosphere produced by human geometry imposed on a natural landscape. Because the forest sits near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and Mount Scott, it is easy to combine with other southwestern Oklahoma stops. The most interesting observation is often simply how quickly an ordinary forestry project can become a legend once its original purpose is forgotten.
