Destination Guide
Osage Hills State Park
Tucked into the wooded hills of Osage County, Osage Hills State Park offers a side of Oklahoma that can surprise first-time visitors. Dense forests, rocky bluffs, winding creeks and quiet Lookout Lake create a landscape that feels far removed from the open prairie often associated with the region.
Located between Pawhuska and Bartlesville in the heart of the Osage Nation, the approximately 1,100-acre park is one of Oklahoma's original state parks and preserves an impressive collection of structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. Native-stone cabins, picnic shelters, bridges and other structures remain throughout the park, giving visitors a glimpse into the craftsmanship of the New Deal era and the early development of Oklahoma's state park system.
Explore the Trails
Hiking is one of the best ways to experience Osage Hills. A network of trails winds through mature hardwood forest, across rocky terrain and alongside Sand Creek and Lookout Lake. The terrain is noticeably hillier than much of northeastern Oklahoma, with climbs, descents and switchbacks that provide a moderate challenge without requiring an all-day trek.
The Creek Loop Trail, approximately 1.5 miles long, travels through heavily wooded terrain and rocky bluffs before reaching a scenic overlook above Sand Creek. The Lake Trail passes through an old CCC campground and follows the edge of Lookout Lake, while the Overlook Trail leads toward the historic Lookout Tower. The trail system is also open to mountain biking, giving riders an opportunity to tackle the park's rocky hills and winding single-track terrain.
Sand Creek & Lookout Lake
Water plays a major role in the park's scenery. Sand Creek winds through the forest, flowing between rock formations and creating small cascades and peaceful places to stop along the way. Lookout Lake provides another quiet corner of the park and is a popular destination for fishing.
Anglers can try for bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish, while fishing boats are available for rent at the lake. Kayaking and canoeing are also among the recreational activities available within the park.
A Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps
One of the most distinctive features of Osage Hills State Park is its CCC heritage. During the Great Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps crews helped transform the rugged landscape into a recreational destination while constructing roads, trails, bridges, shelters and buildings using native materials.
Several of those structures remain part of the park experience today, including the Bobcat Hollow Bridge, CCC Pumphouse, Lookout Tower and Sand Creek Picnic Pavilion. Visitors can also stay overnight in one of eight native-stone cabins originally constructed by the CCC in the 1930s.
The historic cabins have been updated with modern conveniences including central heat and air, kitchen facilities and fireplaces, allowing visitors to experience a piece of Oklahoma's state park history without giving up all the comforts of home.
Camping & Recreation
Osage Hills State Park offers RV sites, tent camping, historic cabins and canvas wall tents on wooden platforms, making it suitable for everything from a simple weekend camping trip to a cabin getaway. A large group camp with bunkhouses, dining facilities and a commercial kitchen is also available for reunions, retreats and other gatherings.
During the warmer months, visitors can cool off in the park's seasonal swimming pool. Other amenities include picnic areas, tennis courts and a ball field. Wildlife is abundant throughout the park, and hikers may encounter white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobcats, gray foxes and even bald eagles.
One of Oklahoma's Best Fall Destinations
While Osage Hills is worth visiting throughout the year, autumn may be when the park is at its best. The dense hardwood forest turns shades of yellow, orange and red, making the park one of northeastern Oklahoma's most scenic places for a fall hike, picnic or weekend getaway.
With its rugged trails, flowing creek, quiet lake and remarkable collection of CCC-era structures, Osage Hills State Park combines Oklahoma history and outdoor adventure in a relatively compact setting. It is an excellent stop for anyone exploring Pawhuska, Bartlesville or the greater Osage Nation — and a reminder that some of Oklahoma's most impressive landscapes can be found well beyond its better-known mountain and lake destinations.
