Destination Guide

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is one of the state's largest family attractions, with extensive animal exhibits spread across a landscaped campus in northeast Oklahoma City. Its collection includes elephants, great apes, big cats, hoofed animals, reptiles, birds and many other species from around the world. Major habitat areas are designed to give visitors a more immersive experience than traditional rows of cages. The zoo has also invested heavily in conservation, breeding programs and animal welfare, making education and species preservation a central part of the institution's role. The botanical side of the property is easy to overlook. Mature trees, planted gardens and seasonal landscaping contribute substantially to the experience, especially during long walking days between exhibit areas. Families should plan for several hours rather than treating the zoo as a quick stop, particularly if they want to include animal encounters, rides or keeper programs. Because the zoo is adjacent to Science Museum Oklahoma and other attractions in the Adventure District, it works especially well as part of a full-day family itinerary.

OkieX Recommendation

Stop by "Explorikeet" and feed the lorikeets nectar. Well worth it!

What We Liked

A genuinely excellent zoo that punches well above its weight. Sanctuary Asia rivals habitats at much larger zoos. The elephant program is nationally recognized. Grounds are beautifully landscaped (it's also a botanical garden). Great value for the price. The perfect family day out in Oklahoma City. We were impressed by how well all of the exhibits were maintained.

Things to Know

A trip in the summer can get very hot, so arrive early and beat the heat.

Practical Tips

Admission is $20 adults, $17 kids (3-11), seniors $17. Arrive early when animals are most active and it's cooler. Sanctuary Asia is the must-see exhibit — the elephant and rhino habitats are world-class. Giraffe feeding ($4) is a highlight for kids. Tram rides ($3) save tired legs. Bring water — it gets hot in summer and much of the zoo is outdoors. Located in the OKC Adventure District next to Science Museum Oklahoma and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Free parking. Allow 3-4 hours.
