Destination Guide

Natural Falls State Park near Colcord protects a 77-foot waterfall that drops into a shaded ravine in northeastern Oklahoma. The falls are framed by dense vegetation and layered rock, creating a cool, enclosed environment very different from the surrounding uplands. Observation platforms provide views from above and below, while trails explore the park's forest and ravine. Water flow varies with rainfall, so the falls can look dramatically different between wet and dry periods. The park gained national visibility when scenes from the film "Where the Red Fern Grows" were shot in the area. Even without that connection, the waterfall and lush setting make it one of the state's more photogenic natural destinations. Swimming is generally not the focus here; the attraction is scenery and hiking rather than a waterfall pool recreation area. Spring and periods following rainfall often provide the strongest flow, while fall adds colorful foliage. Natural Falls works well with Grand Lake, Lake Eucha and other northeastern Oklahoma stops.
