Destination Guide

The Narrows Trail in the Wichita Mountains offers one of the more rugged hiking experiences in southwestern Oklahoma. The route follows a constricted valley of rock and water where steep granite walls create a landscape that feels far removed from the surrounding prairie. The attraction is the geology as much as the hike. Massive granite formations, boulders and exposed rock create scrambling opportunities and dramatic views, while pools and seasonal water add variety depending on recent weather. The area is part of the larger Wichita Mountains ecosystem, where rugged uplands rise abruptly from grassland and support wildlife ranging from bison and elk to smaller mammals and birds. This is not a manicured urban trail. Rocky footing, heat, wind and rapidly changing weather can make the route more demanding than the mileage suggests. Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are important, and visitors should avoid climbing beyond their ability. For hikers already exploring Mount Scott, Charon's Garden or the wildlife refuge, the Narrows provides another excellent example of how unexpectedly rugged Oklahoma terrain can be.
