Destination Guide

Mount Scott is one of the most accessible high points in the Wichita Mountains and offers broad views across southwestern Oklahoma. A paved road climbs close to the summit, allowing visitors to reach rugged granite scenery without a long hike. From the top, the landscape opens across Lake Lawtonka, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and surrounding plains. The contrast between granite peaks and grassland is especially striking near sunrise and sunset, although wind can be intense at higher elevations. Mount Scott is geologically part of an ancient mountain system formed from igneous rock far older than the modern Rockies. Erosion has reduced the Wichitas to their present rounded forms, leaving exposed granite that attracts climbers, hikers and photographers. Because the summit area can become crowded and weather can change quickly, visitors should follow refuge road closures and parking rules. Mount Scott pairs naturally with Medicine Park, the Holy City and the wildlife refuge, making it one of the best orientation points for exploring the entire Wichita Mountains region.
