Destination Guide

Medicine Park is a historic resort town built along Medicine Creek at the edge of the Wichita Mountains. Founded in the early twentieth century, the community became known for its distinctive cobblestone architecture, using rounded local stones to create cabins, shops and public buildings. The town developed as a recreation destination for visitors to nearby Fort Sill and the Wichita Mountains. Over time it experienced periods of prosperity and decline before being revived as an arts, dining and tourism community. Today Medicine Creek runs through the center of town, with pedestrian areas, shops and restaurants clustered around the historic stone buildings. The setting is especially attractive because rugged granite hills rise immediately beyond the town. Medicine Park works best as part of a broader Wichita Mountains trip. Visitors can explore Mount Scott, the wildlife refuge or Holy City during the day and return to the town for food and an evening walk. Its strongest asset is the combination of genuine historic architecture with a scenic mountain-edge location.

Things to Know

The town is small and can feel crowded on peak summer weekends. Some shops are seasonal. The drive from OKC is about 90 minutes.

Practical Tips

Combine with a visit to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge — they're right next to each other. Friday and Saturday evenings often have live music in town.
