Destination Guide

McGee Creek State Park in southeastern Oklahoma surrounds a clear reservoir backed by wooded hills and relatively undeveloped country. The setting is quieter and more rugged than many of the state's large lake parks. Fishing, boating, camping and hiking are the main activities. The reservoir is known for bass fishing, while wooded coves and shoreline provide good wildlife habitat. The nearby McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area adds a backcountry dimension, with more primitive trails and a much less developed landscape. That makes the region appealing to visitors who want both conventional state-park facilities and access to wilder terrain. Fall is especially attractive because hardwood forests around the lake develop strong color. The park is also close enough to Atoka and southeastern Oklahoma historical sites to combine outdoor recreation with regional history. McGee Creek is best for travelers who value quiet, forest and water over large-scale resort amenities.

Practical Tips

The McGee Creek Natural Area offers 10+ miles of backcountry trails. Rock climbing at nearby cliffs is excellent. Very uncrowded — a true escape.
