Destination Guide

The McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area protects a rugged, largely undeveloped landscape adjacent to McGee Creek State Park and reservoir in southeastern Oklahoma. Unlike the more developed portions of the state park, this area emphasizes backcountry travel, wooded ridges, streams and primitive recreation. The terrain is characteristic of the Ouachita foothills, with forested slopes, rocky ground and relatively little visible development. Trails provide opportunities for hiking, backpacking and wildlife observation, and the remoteness gives the area a very different feel from Oklahoma's busier lake parks. Deer, turkey and a wide variety of smaller wildlife are common, while seasonal color can be especially strong in the fall. This is a destination for visitors who want quiet and space rather than marinas, beaches or highly developed facilities. Cell service and amenities may be limited, so carrying water, navigation tools and basic backcountry supplies is sensible. The recreation area works particularly well for travelers who want to see the wilder side of southeastern Oklahoma without venturing all the way into the most remote sections of the Ouachita National Forest.
