Destination Guide
Built in 1916, Marland’s Grand Home in Ponca City offers a fascinating look at the early success of oilman, politician, and Oklahoma governor E.W. Marland. Long before he constructed the enormous Marland Mansion, Marland and his wife Virginia made this elegant home the center of their rapidly changing world.
The 22-room Renaissance Revival residence was designed to reflect the wealth Marland accumulated after striking oil near Ponca City and building the Marland Oil Company into one of the nation’s major petroleum enterprises. For its time, the house was remarkably modern, featuring amenities such as central heating, an automatic dishwasher, an indoor swimming pool, and other luxuries rarely found in Oklahoma homes of the period. Yet despite its grandeur, the home feels much more intimate than the palatial estate Marland would build a decade later.
The house also witnessed one of the more unusual chapters in Oklahoma history. E.W. and Virginia Marland took in Virginia’s niece and nephew, Lydie and George Roberts, and adopted them as their own children. After Virginia died in 1926, Marland later had Lydie’s adoption annulled and married her in 1928—a story that became inseparable from the Marland family legacy.
Today, visitors can tour the restored home and see period furnishings, family possessions, photographs, artwork, and exhibits chronicling Marland’s remarkable rise and fall. Displays explore the development of the Oklahoma oil industry, the Marland Oil Company, the Marland family, and the community that grew alongside the petroleum boom.
Marland’s story is particularly compelling because his fortunes changed so dramatically. He went from spectacular oil wealth and national business prominence to losing control of his company, eventually turning to politics and serving as Oklahoma’s tenth governor. His later mansion tends to receive more attention, but the Grand Home captures Marland at an especially important moment—when his oil empire was growing and Ponca City was being transformed along with it.
For visitors interested in Oklahoma history, architecture, the early oil industry, or the extraordinary life of E.W. Marland, the Grand Home provides an intimate introduction to one of the most colorful figures of Oklahoma’s early 20th century.
