Destination Guide

Little Niagara Falls is one of the most popular natural features in Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The low travertine cascade forms where spring-fed Travertine Creek drops over mineral deposits, creating a broad swimming and wading area shaded by mature trees. The feature is smaller than its dramatic name suggests, but its beauty comes from clear water, limestone and dense vegetation rather than height. The constant spring flow historically made this part of Sulphur a major recreation and health-resort destination, and the surrounding Platt District contains stonework, trails and picnic areas developed during the National Park and CCC eras. Summer brings the largest crowds because the water stays comparatively cool, while quieter seasons reveal more of the creek's natural character. Water levels and access can change after storms, and slick travertine surfaces require care. Little Niagara works best as part of a broader visit that includes Travertine Creek, Antelope Springs, Buffalo Springs and the park's historic architecture, giving visitors a fuller sense of why Sulphur's spring system has attracted people for more than a century.
