Destination Guide
The Jim Thorpe Home in Yale preserves the small house where legendary athlete Jim Thorpe lived during part of his post-athletic life. Thorpe, a citizen of the Sac and Fox Nation, became one of the most celebrated athletes of the twentieth century, winning Olympic gold medals and excelling in football, baseball and other sports.
His achievements were extraordinary, but his career also reflects the discrimination Native athletes faced. Thorpe attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School, where he became a national sports figure under a system designed to assimilate Native students. His Olympic titles were later stripped because of minor-league baseball payments and restored long after his death.
The Yale house offers a quieter perspective than a hall-of-fame exhibit. It connects Thorpe's enormous public reputation to the ordinary spaces of his later life in Oklahoma. Visitors interested in sports history will find the story compelling, but the site also opens discussion of Native identity, federal boarding schools and the way American institutions treated one of the era's greatest athletes.
