Destination Guide
The Holy City of the Wichitas is a remarkable collection of stone buildings set among the rugged granite hills near Lawton. Developed during the twentieth century as the setting for an outdoor Easter pageant, the site was designed to evoke the architecture and landscape of biblical Jerusalem.
The complex includes walls, towers, chapels and other structures built from local stone, creating a visually unusual blend of religious theater and Wichita Mountains scenery. The annual Easter pageant became one of the best-known religious events in Oklahoma and drew large crowds for generations.
Even outside performance dates, the site is interesting as architecture. The buildings reflect a period when large-scale outdoor religious dramas were major community events, and their rustic construction ties them closely to the surrounding terrain.
The Holy City is located within the broader Wichita Mountains area, making it easy to combine with wildlife viewing, Mount Scott and Fort Sill. Visitors can appreciate it as a cultural landmark even if they are not attending a religious event, provided they respect its active spiritual significance.
