Destination Guide
Greenwood Rising in Tulsa is a modern history center dedicated to the Greenwood District, the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and the long history of Black community life before and after the attack. The museum is located within the historic district itself, giving its exhibits immediate geographic context.
Interactive displays trace the development of Greenwood into a prosperous Black commercial and residential community, the destruction of May 31-June 1, 1921, and the determined rebuilding that followed. The museum also connects the local story with broader themes of segregation, racial violence, resilience and civil rights.
One of its greatest strengths is refusing to let the massacre become the entire Greenwood story. Visitors learn about entrepreneurs, newspapers, entertainment, churches and everyday life that made Black Wall Street successful in the first place.
After visiting, walking nearby Greenwood Avenue, Vernon AME Church and reconciliation sites makes the history more concrete. Greenwood Rising provides the interpretive framework; the neighborhood outside shows where those events and communities actually existed.
