Destination Guide

Grand Lake State Park is not a single compact park but a collection of state recreation areas around Grand Lake O' the Cherokees in northeastern Oklahoma. Different units offer camping, fishing, boating, shoreline access and other facilities across a large and heavily developed reservoir. Grand Lake has long been one of Oklahoma's major boating destinations. Marinas, sailboats, powerboats and lakeside communities create a more developed recreational atmosphere than many state-park lakes. Natural features still matter, especially in quieter coves and wooded shoreline areas. Birding and fishing can be excellent, and the lake's long, branching shape creates many distinct environments. Visitors should pay attention to which state-park unit they are actually visiting, because facilities and experiences vary considerably. Bernice, Honey Creek and other areas each have their own character. Grand Lake works especially well for travelers who want water recreation combined with restaurants, marinas and nearby towns rather than an isolated wilderness setting.

Practical Tips

Each area offers different experiences — Bernice has the best fishing, Disney offers Pensacola Dam tours. Pick based on your activity.
