Destination Guide
The Glover River in southeastern Oklahoma is prized for being one of the state's least developed major rivers. Flowing through the Ouachita Mountains, it passes forested hills, rocky banks and remote stretches with relatively little shoreline construction.
That wild character makes the river popular with paddlers and anglers, but it also means conditions can be unpredictable. Water levels rise and fall with rainfall, and some stretches become difficult or impossible to float during dry periods. After storms, current can increase rapidly and create hazards.
The Glover is especially important ecologically because its relatively natural flow supports aquatic and riparian habitat that has been altered on many dammed rivers. Access points are limited, and much of the surrounding land is private, so trip planning is essential. For experienced outdoor visitors, the river offers one of the best opportunities in Oklahoma to experience a genuinely remote waterway rather than a developed lake or heavily managed recreation corridor.
