Destination Guide

Geronimo's grave at Fort Sill marks the burial place of the famous Chiricahua Apache leader who spent the final years of his life as a prisoner of war in Oklahoma. After years of resistance in the Southwest, Geronimo surrendered to U.S. forces in 1886 and was removed with other Chiricahua prisoners far from their homelands. The group was eventually transferred to Fort Sill, where many families established homes, farmed and lived under military control. Geronimo became nationally famous, appearing at public events and even participating in Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural parade, but he was never allowed to return permanently to Arizona. The grave is located in the Apache cemetery on Fort Sill and should be treated as a burial site rather than a spectacle. The surrounding graves provide essential context: Geronimo was part of a larger community of prisoners and families whose displacement continued long after active warfare ended. Visitors must also follow current Fort Sill access requirements because the cemetery lies on an active military installation.
