Destination Guide

Fort Towson was established in the 1820s near the Red River and became an important U.S. Army post on the southwestern edge of the frontier. Its location placed it near routes into Texas and, after Choctaw removal, within a rapidly changing part of Indian Territory. The fort's history includes military protection, trade, transportation and the movement of Native peoples. It remained significant during the era of the Republic of Texas and the U.S.-Mexican War, when southern routes and border security were especially important. Ruins, reconstructed features and interpretive displays help visitors understand the layout and function of the post. The nearby Doaksville townsite adds an important civilian and Choctaw dimension, showing how a community developed beside the fort. Fort Towson is one of the best places in southeastern Oklahoma to explore the early nineteenth-century frontier before the better-known cattle-drive and outlaw eras. Its history makes clear that the region was already politically and economically complex decades before Oklahoma statehood.

Established in 1824 to protect the Choctaw Nation, Fort Towson was where the last Confederate general to surrender did so in June 1865 — two months after Appomattox. Ruins and a visitor center with artifacts. Combine with nearby Raymond Gary State Park.
