Destination Guide
Fort Sill, established in 1869, remains an active U.S. Army post and one of Oklahoma's most historically important military sites. Its history encompasses the Plains Wars, reservation era, artillery training and more than a century of continuing military use.
Historic buildings and museums preserve material connected with soldiers, Native nations and the development of the post. The fort is closely associated with figures including Geronimo, Quanah Parker and the Buffalo Soldiers, while its later history reflects the rise of field artillery as a major Army specialty.
The site requires a broad perspective. Fort Sill was part of federal military pressure that confined Comanche, Kiowa, Apache and other peoples to reservations, yet it also became a place where Native families lived, negotiated and interacted with the military. Today the post's historic district and museums allow visitors to explore those overlapping stories.
Because Fort Sill is an active military installation, entry requirements can change and visitors should verify current access rules. The combination of living military function and preserved nineteenth-century landscape makes it unique among Oklahoma forts.
