Destination Guide

Fallis in Lincoln County is one of Oklahoma's historically Black communities and developed during the era when African American settlers established towns offering opportunities for land ownership, business and local civic life. The town once supported schools, churches, stores and a population much larger than what remains today. Economic change, rural depopulation and the pull of larger cities gradually reduced the community. Many buildings disappeared, leaving a quieter landscape in which the historic town can be difficult to visualize without maps or photographs. That limited physical survival makes Fallis important rather than insignificant. It demonstrates how easily the history of small Black towns can vanish from the visible landscape even when the community played a meaningful regional role. Visitors should stay on public roads and respect remaining residents and private property. Fallis is best understood as part of the network of historically Black Oklahoma towns rather than as a stand-alone ghost town.
