Destination Guide
Fairfax lies at the heart of Osage County and is deeply connected with the oil boom and the murders known as the Osage Reign of Terror. During the early twentieth century, Osage citizens received substantial royalty income from the tribe's mineral estate, making the region one of the wealthiest per capita communities in the country.
That wealth attracted businesses, speculators and predators. In the 1920s, a series of murders targeted Osage people for inheritance of headrights, insurance and control of estates. Fairfax and nearby Grayhorse were central to several of the best-documented cases, including members of Mollie Burkhart's family.
The historic district preserves buildings and streets from the same era, allowing visitors to place the crimes within an actual town rather than an abstract narrative. The story should be approached through Osage perspectives and with sensitivity toward living descendants. Pairing Fairfax with the Osage Nation Museum in Pawhuska and Grayhorse Cemetery provides a fuller understanding of both the prosperity and violence that defined this period.
