Destination Guide

The Drumright Historical Museum tells the story of a town born from one of Oklahoma's major early oil booms. Drumright expanded rapidly after oil discoveries in the Cushing-Drumright field, drawing drilling crews, investors, merchants and families into what had been a sparsely developed area. Museum collections document the petroleum industry alongside the social life that grew around it. Drilling tools, photographs, business records and household items help show how quickly a boomtown could acquire streets, schools, stores and civic institutions. The town's history also includes fires, labor issues and the volatility that came with dependence on oil. Drumright is a particularly good place to study boomtown development because much of its identity still reflects that formative era. The museum provides context before visitors explore the historic downtown and surrounding oil landscape. Comparing Drumright with nearby Cushing and Shamrock also reveals the different paths oil towns took after the first great wave of drilling subsided.
