Destination Guide

Doaksville was once an important town in the Choctaw Nation, located near Fort Towson along a major route through southeastern Indian Territory. During the nineteenth century it served as a commercial, legal and political center and was home to Choctaw citizens, traders and travelers. The town's significance included major moments in Choctaw and regional history. Courts operated there, political meetings took place nearby and the community benefited from traffic associated with Fort Towson and routes connecting Arkansas and Texas. As transportation patterns changed and the fort declined, Doaksville gradually disappeared. Today the townsite is interpreted through archaeological remains, foundations, cemetery areas and reconstructed understanding rather than a standing commercial district. That makes it especially rewarding for visitors who enjoy imagining vanished places from physical traces. Doaksville is best visited together with Fort Towson, because the two sites explain each other. The fort provided military and transportation activity, while the town shows how Native and civilian community life developed beside it.
