Destination Guide

The enormous crude-oil storage tank farms around Cushing make the city one of the most important energy hubs in the United States. Cushing became a major oil center after early twentieth-century discoveries, but its modern significance comes from the network of pipelines and storage terminals that converge there. The city is closely associated with the pricing and delivery infrastructure for U.S. crude oil, and the scale of the storage complex is difficult to appreciate until seen from the surrounding roads. Rows of massive cylindrical tanks stretch across the landscape, creating an industrial panorama unlike almost anywhere else in Oklahoma. These facilities are active, secured infrastructure, not tourist attractions. Visitors should view them only from public roads and legal pull-offs, never approach gates or attempt to enter private property. Pairing a distant view of the tank farms with the Cushing Historical Museum makes the experience much more meaningful, linking the city's early oil-boom history with its continuing role in national energy markets.
