Destination Guide
The Coleman Theatre in Miami is one of Oklahoma's finest surviving historic theaters and a major architectural landmark on old Route 66. Opened in 1929 by mining magnate George L. Coleman, the elaborate Spanish Colonial Revival building was designed to impress audiences before they even reached their seats.
The interior features ornate plasterwork, decorative painting, grand staircases and a theater organ, creating the atmosphere of the lavish movie palaces that flourished before television. The Coleman hosted films, live performances and touring entertainers for generations.
Its location in Miami gives the building additional context. The surrounding region was transformed by lead and zinc mining, and the theater's opulence reflects the wealth generated during that boom. Later preservation efforts saved the building from the fate of many historic theaters.
Tours and performances offer different experiences: daytime visits emphasize architecture and restoration, while attending a show allows the building to function as originally intended. Few Oklahoma attractions combine Route 66, mining wealth and theater history as effectively as the Coleman.
