Destination Guide

Cold Spring and Inscription Rock in the Oklahoma Panhandle preserve one of the most evocative stops on the Santa Fe Trail. Travelers crossing the dry High Plains depended on dependable water sources, and Cold Spring became a vital campsite along the Cimarron Route. Nearby rock surfaces preserve names, dates and inscriptions left by travelers, soldiers and other people who passed through the area. These markings transform the site from an abstract trail location into a personal record: individual travelers literally carved evidence of their passage into the landscape. The remoteness of the district is part of its significance. The open prairie, limited water and extreme weather help visitors appreciate the challenges faced by wagon parties moving across the Panhandle. This is not a highly developed attraction, so planning, weather awareness and respect for fragile inscriptions are important. Combined with Autograph Rock and Camp Nichols, Cold Spring forms one of Oklahoma's strongest clusters of Santa Fe Trail history.
