Destination Guide
Clayton Lake State Park in southeastern Oklahoma surrounds a reservoir tucked into the wooded hills near the Ouachita region. The park is quiet and relatively remote, with fishing, camping and paddling as its primary attractions.
Forested shoreline gives the lake a secluded feel, and the surrounding terrain is more rugged than the broad plains farther west. Wildlife observation can be good, especially in less developed areas around the water.
The park is best suited to visitors seeking simplicity rather than resort-style amenities. Bringing supplies and checking current road or lake conditions is wise because the area is rural.
Clayton Lake also serves as a useful base for exploring nearby mountain country and small southeastern Oklahoma communities. Its strength is not a single signature attraction but the combination of water, forest and low traffic.
Practical Tips
Very quiet and uncrowded. The lake is stocked with bass and catfish. Beautiful fall color in the surrounding Ouachita Forest.
