Destination Guide

Cherokee Landing State Park sits on the shores of Lake Tenkiller in eastern Oklahoma and offers a low-key alternative to the larger resort areas around the lake. Wooded hills and clear water create a distinctly Ozark-like setting. Camping, boating, fishing and shoreline recreation are the main activities. Lake Tenkiller is known for relatively clear water, making it popular for swimming, diving and fishing compared with many more turbid Oklahoma reservoirs. The park's smaller scale is part of its appeal. Visitors looking for a simple campsite, lake access and quiet wooded surroundings may prefer it to heavily developed destinations. Because the terrain around Tenkiller is hilly, roads and campsites can feel more enclosed than parks on broad prairie lakes. Fall color is especially attractive. Cherokee Landing also works well as a base for exploring nearby Cherokee history, Tahlequah and the Illinois River region.

Practical Tips

Less crowded than other Grand Lake access points. Good boat ramps and fishing dock.
