Destination Guide
Burbank in Osage County grew during one of Oklahoma's most extraordinary oil booms. Petroleum development on the Osage Reservation brought enormous wealth to the Osage Nation while also drawing oil companies, workers, speculators and businesses into previously rural areas.
The town became part of a landscape crowded with leases, derricks, pipelines and temporary settlements. Its history cannot be separated from Osage mineral ownership, because the tribe retained communal rights to the mineral estate and received royalty income through headrights. That system produced immense wealth but also became a motive in the murders and exploitation associated with the Osage Reign of Terror.
Burbank today is much quieter than during the boom. The surviving townscape and surrounding oil country provide a useful way to visualize how rapidly the region changed. Visitors interested in the story should pair Burbank with Pawhuska, Fairfax or the Osage Nation Museum to understand both sides of the oil boom: industrial expansion and the profound consequences for Osage families whose wealth drew national attention and criminal predation.
