Destination Guide

Boynton is one of Oklahoma's historically Black towns, founded in Indian Territory during the period when African American settlers and Freedmen families established communities across eastern Oklahoma. The town developed around agriculture, local businesses, churches and schools. Like many rural towns, Boynton declined during the twentieth century as farm employment changed and residents moved toward larger cities. Even so, the community remains an important part of Oklahoma's network of all-Black towns, many of which once offered residents greater local autonomy and economic opportunity than could be found in segregated white communities. The town is not a conventional tourist attraction. Its history is found in surviving streets, churches, cemeteries and community structures. Visitors should approach it respectfully as a living place. Boynton becomes far more meaningful when considered alongside nearby Tullahassee, Rentiesville and Muskogee-area Black history, revealing how densely this part of Oklahoma was connected to African American settlement and Freedmen communities.
