Destination Guide
The Boise City Bombing Memorial recalls one of the strangest incidents of World War II on the American home front. On the night of July 5, 1943, a U.S. Army Air Forces training crew mistakenly identified Boise City as its practice target and dropped training bombs on the town.
The bombs were designed for exercises and carried small explosive charges, but they still struck streets and buildings. Remarkably, no one was killed. Lights were quickly extinguished and the crew eventually realized the mistake. Some members of the same crew later served in combat.
The memorial gives physical form to a story that sounds almost unbelievable without local documentation. It also illustrates the intensity of wartime aviation training across the Great Plains, where young crews practiced navigation and bombing before deployment overseas. Visiting the memorial alongside the Cimarron Heritage Center provides more context about the event and the town that unexpectedly became a target during the war.
