Destination Guide

Boiling Springs State Park near Woodward is one of Oklahoma's original state parks and is named for springs where groundwater appears to bubble up through the sand. The water is not actually boiling from heat; the effect comes from pressure moving sand at the spring outlets. The park occupies a wooded oasis in otherwise open northwestern Oklahoma, making its shade and water especially striking. Trails, camping, cabins and picnic areas provide a traditional state-park experience. New Deal-era development helped shape the park, and historic stonework remains part of its character. The springs and woodland also support wildlife that can be easier to observe here than on the surrounding plains. Boiling Springs is not a dramatic geothermal site, but the unusual spring behavior and contrast with the regional landscape make it memorable. It works well as a quiet outdoor stop for travelers exploring Woodward, Fort Supply and the broader northwestern part of the state.

Practical Tips

The bison herd is a highlight. The swimming pool is spring-fed and very cold — perfect for summer heat.
