Destination Guide

The Beckham County Courthouse in Sayre is one of western Oklahoma's most recognizable civic buildings. Its monumental design reflects the confidence of county seats during the early twentieth century, when courthouses were intended to communicate permanence, law and local pride. The building occupies a prominent place in Sayre's historic downtown and has become familiar to Route 66 travelers because the old highway passes through the community. Its architecture provides a contrast with the commercial storefronts, motels and service stations more commonly associated with Route 66. The courthouse is still a working public building, so visitors should treat it differently from a museum. Exterior viewing and photography are straightforward, while interior access depends on normal county operations and security. The site is worth including because it shows another side of western Oklahoma history: not boomtown industry or roadside novelty, but the civic institutions that helped organize new counties after statehood. Its imposing presence also makes it an excellent architectural anchor for exploring Sayre's downtown.
