Destination Guide

Antelope Springs is one of the quieter natural features within Chickasaw National Recreation Area at Sulphur. The spring emerges in the wooded portion of the park that once formed Platt National Park, where a network of mineral and freshwater springs drew visitors long before the modern recreation area was created. Short trails and stonework built during the park's early years connect the spring with nearby creeks, picnic areas and other historic landscape features. The appeal here is subtle rather than dramatic. Clear spring water, mature trees and shaded paths create a cool setting that contrasts sharply with the more open prairie outside the park. The area also illustrates why Sulphur became a health and resort destination: springs were once promoted for their supposed medicinal qualities, and protecting access to them was central to the establishment of the federal reservation that preceded Platt National Park. Antelope Springs is best enjoyed as part of a walking exploration of the historic Platt District rather than as a stand-alone attraction. Pairing it with Travertine Creek, Buffalo Springs, Little Niagara and the park's CCC-era architecture gives visitors a fuller picture of how water shaped both the natural landscape and the tourism history of Sulphur.
