Destination Guide

Adamson is a former coal-mining community near Hartshorne whose decline followed the contraction of the southeastern Oklahoma coal industry. The town once supported miners and their families in a region filled with shafts, company operations and rail connections. Mining shaped the community's entire existence. Workers faced cave-ins, gas, explosions and long-term health risks, while families depended on an industry subject to sudden downturns. When mines closed or production moved elsewhere, the economic reason for the town largely disappeared. Today Adamson is best understood through surviving roads, scattered structures, cemetery sites and the broader mining landscape. It is not a preserved attraction, and much of the area is private property, so visitors should explore from public roads and avoid abandoned structures. The ghost-town atmosphere is most meaningful when paired with the history of nearby Hartshorne, Haileyville and Krebs, showing how many communities in this part of Oklahoma were created by coal and then diminished when the industry no longer sustained them.
