Destination Guide

The 101 Ranch near Ponca City was one of the largest and most famous ranching enterprises in Oklahoma and later became internationally known for the Miller Brothers' Wild West show. The operation combined cattle, agriculture, entertainment and business on a massive scale. The ranch's Wild West show featured cowboys, Native performers, trick riders and other acts that toured widely and helped shape popular images of the American West. Notable performers passed through the operation, and the ranch became a training ground for people who later worked in rodeo and film. Most of the original complex no longer survives intact, so the historic site is more evocative than complete. Markers, foundations and landscape features help visitors reconstruct a place that once operated almost like a private town. The 101 Ranch is valuable because it links real ranching with the entertainment industry's version of the West. That overlap explains how Oklahoma moved from frontier experience into a source of national mythology during the early twentieth century.
